The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site 2019 Spring “Humanities NY Reading and Discussion Series” entitled “Serving” continues a multi-year program series funded through Humanities NY grants. This spring’s series will again be held at the community’s Hay Memorial Library, 2nd fl. meeting room (ADA accessible). The four-week series, starting on Wednesday May 1, continues each Wednesday through May 22, from 6:30pm to 8pm. Participants engage in discussions following selected readings from the text “The Civically Engaged Reader: A Diverse Collection of Short Provocative Readings on Civic Activity.” The selections, drawn from literature, philosophy, and religion, invite reflection on why we choose to serve or be served. Authors range from Aristotle to Kafka, Langston Hughes to Jane Addams, Andrew Carnegie to Pablo Neruda. Team leaders Josh and John will assign weekly readings. Josh Canale teaches history at Jefferson Community College and John Deans is the college’s former president and history instructor. Participants do not need to attend all sessions. Once registered, a copy of the anthology may be borrowed at the Hay Memorial Library during library hours.
