Description
The Antique Boat Museum is proud to announce a new addition to its free educational offerings this summer in collaboration with the Future Fisherman Foundation, a two-day program called Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs. The mission of the Future Fisherman Foundation is to unite the sportfishing industry, a nationwide network of state outdoor educators, national conservation groups and youth organizations dedicated to introducing America’s youth to angling and the outdoors. Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs will take place at ABM on Tuesday, August 6 and Wednesday, August 7 from 9am-12pm. This program uses the development of angling skills as a gateway to teach adolescents about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and how to deal with the challenges facing them in their young lives. Beyond fishing, topics covered include fish biology, human environmental impact and life skills. Local fishing guide Tom Gillette of Classic Charters will instruct students ages 12-17 over the course of two mornings and will conclude the program with a traditional 1000 Islands Shore Dinner. This program is offered free of charge and students will leave class with the equipment necessary to continue their newfound hobby. ABM and the Future Fisherman Foundation welcome local involvement through the donation of funds and materials needed to inspire the next generation of anglers. Registration forms are available on the Antique Boat Museum’s website (abm.org) and at the Admissions Desk. For questions regarding the Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs course or any of ABM’s other educational programming, please contact Amanda Dudley, Director of Education at 315.686.4104 x225 or [email protected] The Antique Boat Museum is the premier freshwater nautical museum in North America. Located on the St. Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands, ABM features a collection of over 300 antique and classic boats along with thousands of recreational boating artifacts. From May to October, the campus comes alive with speed boat rides, boat shows, educational programs for all ages, special events and more. For more information please visit the Museum’s website at ABM.org.

Description

For more than 30 years Poker Runs America and Power Boating Canada have been bringing the thrill of performance boating to the crystal blue waters of the 1000 Islands region. A POKER RUN is fun on the water with power to burn. A poker run is not a race but a game of chance and an assembly of some of the hottest, fastest and most exotic boats in North America.

Come to Kingston and experience the beautiful waterfront city and shop along the cobblestone streets then check the boats on display around Kingston Confederation Basin.

1000 Islands is home to world record holder Bill Tomlinson and his 50 foot Mystic, "My Way" catamaran boat.

See the boats on Friday in front of the City Hall on Ontario St. and meet the players. On Saturday, watch the boats unleash their horsepower along the route: Lunch in Brockville and cards stops in Gananoque and Prescott with the final card at home port Kingston.

This is a free event for spectators. Come and experience the power and thrill of adrenaline on the water! Wanna Ride? Experience the thrill and register for your own Ride of a Lifetime on a poker run boat on Sunday.

WPBS TV is pleased to be offering a special free screening of an episode of “Great Lakes Now” in the theatre at the Aquatarium during the Big River Festival. Join us for a free screening of Great Lakes Now episode, “Ships and Shipwrecks” on Monday, August 26 at 6pm at the Aquatarium during the Big River Brockville in Brockville, Ontario. The Detroit Public Television Great Lakes Bureau’s Great Lakes Now series is made up of 30-minute episodes reporting on the world’s largest system of freshwater, with in-depth coverage of the environmental, economic and political issues that impact the lakes and the people who use, cherish and protect them. In this episode of Great Lakes Now, viewers are introduced to the CSL Welland, the series of locks that allow ships to bypass Niagara Falls and the men who work on board. Hear opening remarks from new WPBS President and General Manager, Mark Prasuhn, catch the screening before the premiere on Tuesday, August 27, and enjoy light refreshments. Event is free, but pre-registration is suggested. Register online at wpbstv.org/tickets. Guests will be welcomed at their leisure during the event on a first come, first served basis to visit our 4th floor Pilot House to look up as we explore the galaxy and planets – like any astronaut would! The presentation explores both our solar system and highlights of what’s visible in the night sky on the evening of your show. This tour will include constellations, planets, the moon, colliding galaxies, an exploding star, glowing nebulae, star clusters and planetary transits. An exciting journey into space based on realistic computer generated, large formatted images that are projected on the Aquatarium’s planetarium. Facilitated by Paul Bullock, bringing with him a career of teaching here in Brockville at Thousand Islands Secondary School. Paul is also a long-time astronomy enthusiast. A proud part of the Brockville Big River Festival.

Description
Presented by P&G The event takes place only every three years at the Brockville waterfront so don't miss it in 2019! Ships will line the waterfront at Blockhouse Island Parkway, Centeen Park, and Hardy Park from Friday, August 30th to Sunday, September 1st, 2019. The grounds will open at 2pm on Friday, August 30th, and deck tours of the ships will be available on Saturday and Sunday for Festival Passport holders . Tall ships, including the Bluenose II, and other watercraft line the waterfront and the harbour while entertainment and vendors will be set up on land. Admission to the grounds to see these majestic ships is available with a $5 wristband for all three days, while deck tours of the ships will be available by purchasing a Festival Passport for $15 which grants each passport holder access to each ship one time (deck tours are available on Saturday and Sunday only). The passport has details on each participating ship and will be stamped after each tour, making it a great take home souvenir from the event. NOTE: your Festival Passport also gives you admission onto the grounds – you do not need to purchase both a passport and a general admissions wristband. Some of the ships in attendance will be offering special day sail-outs and evening dinner cruises for an additional fee. New this year will be the option to purchase tickets to sail on tall ship the Empire Sandy during Friday’s Parade of Sail, and tickets to tour the Bluenose II and one other tall ship after hours on Friday and Saturday night to live music with drinks and finger foods in Centeen Park. Tickets to those events will be limited, so be sure to check our detailed ticket information page for details. At our past events these special tickets have all sold out prior to the event, so be sure to plan ahead and purchase your tickets in advance. Tickets are now on sale, click here for details and direct purchasing links. Follow our festival facebook page for updates and notices about ticket availability. Please plan ahead and book your accommodations early! Please review our detailed ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ page for more information on your most pressing questions. We hope to see you in Brockville in 2019.
