Held during New York State’s Path Through History Weekend, the Small Craft Festival is designed for longtime boating enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Visitors will have opportunities to sail, row, and paddle a variety of small craft on the St. Lawrence River, with no previous boating experience required.

Throughout the day, guests can also watch sailing races led by ABM instructors, see bronze casting demonstrations, try knot tying, paint sailboats and buoys, explore Museum exhibits, and enjoy food and beer along the waterfront. On-water activities are weather permitting, but the festival will take place rain or shine.
“At Small Craft Festival, we want people to do more than simply look at boats,” said Molly Voth, Museum Educator at the Antique Boat Museum. “It’s a chance to get on the water, try a new skill, watch some friendly competition, and experience the traditions of recreational boating in a fun and approachable way.”

A trivia contest will begin at 1 p.m., testing participants’ knowledge of small craft, recreational boating, and life on the water. Visitors can compete solo or as a team. The winner or winning team will receive a private two-hour cruise aboard Zipper, ABM’s 41-foot speedboat, for up to 12 passengers, along with a complimentary Museum membership.

Small Craft Festival is part of New York State’s Path Through History Weekend, a statewide celebration connecting visitors with historic and cultural sites through special programs, demonstrations, and experiences. At ABM, that history comes to life through the boats, skills, and traditions that have shaped recreation on the St. Lawrence River.

Admission to Small Craft Festival is $15 for adults, with discounted admission available for seniors and military members. Children ages 6 and under are admitted free. The Antique Boat Museum is located at 750 Mary Street in Clayton, New York.
