Brockville is home to Canada’s first railway tunnel, built between 1854 and 1860, extending 500 metres (1/3 mile) under the city. Following extensive renovations, the tunnel was opened end-to-end for visitor traffic in August 2017. Renovations included masonry work, smooth concrete walkway, sound system and dazzling multi-colored lighting that highlights mineral deposits and architectural features.
